Congratulations! Kathy completed the Teacher's Training
workshop on the Dance for Parkinson's (Dance for PD) program.
Dance for PD is a
collaboration between the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group (MMDG/BPG) that teaches classes and offers
teacher training. After a decade, in 2011, Dance for PD has more than 40 affiliated satellite programs running in 7 countries. In June 2011, a UK study by Roehampton University looked at a Dance for PD program run by the English National Ballet. They concluded the program
helps people with Parkinson’s physically, mentally and socially. It: - Can help with mobility in the short
term and can loosen up the spinal area to help with stability and posture
- Gives participants the tools
to increase body awareness and to increase confidence to use the mobility they have, but may not have had the courage
to use
- Precipitates feelings of well-being, determination and achievement and provides opportunities to create movement
and stimulate the imagination
- Provides an event for people with Parkinson’s that is about art, rather than about
disease
- Provides a means for social interaction with an enjoyable way for participants to exercise as a group
